At the Rushton Woods Preserve bird-banding station, Prof. Catherine Staples’ Intro to Creative Writing students had a chance to practice what Heimbold professor Mike McCormack termed the “long gaze” as they marveled at the small details of songbirds and contemplated the phenomena of spring migration. It was a fitting end for a writing course, which emphasized the accuracy of image, the importance of long, close looks, and so often considered the interplay between the particular and the vast.
