English Majors Outing: Frankenstein and Dracula at the Rosenbach

Join English professor Megan Quigley for an afternoon at the renowned Rosenbach Museum and Library in Philadelphia to view a new exhibition, “Gothic Monsters / Modern Science,” on Frankenstein and Dracula.  The exhibition explores the creation of two of history’s most memorable monsters. In honor of the bicentennial of the publication of Frankenstein, handwritten pages of Mary Shelley’s groundbreaking novel will be displayed alongside Bram Stoker’s personal notes for Dracula for the first time, accompanied by scientific and medical works from the 19th century to the present.

The outing will take place on Sat., Oct. 21, from 12:00-2:00 pm.  Meet at the Rosenbach at 2008-2010 Delancey Place in Philadelphia.  If you’re not driving, take the SEPTA train from Villanova to Suburban Square and walk to the museum.  Student admission to the Rosenbach is $5.00.

Elizabeth Eby in Denmark

Senior English major Elizabeth Eby spent the spring semester studying in Denmark.  Below are pictures from her visit to Kronborg Castle, the setting for Shakespeare's Hamlet. 

Adds Elizabeth, "It's hard to tell, but I'm sporting my English department t-shirt. The castle is situated in Helsingør (Elsinore in English), a quaint Danish town. One of the highlights of my visit was the chance to explore the casemates, which are dark underground passages where soldiers would hide from enemies back in the day.  My visit to the castle made me excited to take Dr. Dailey's Shakespeare class this fall!"

From Moby Dick to Dogfish: How One English Major Applied Literary Studies to Beer-Making

Sam Calagione, the founder of the Dogfish Head Craft Brewery and winner of a prestigious James Beard award in 2017 (for “Outstanding Wine, Spirits, or Beer Professional”), was an English major and M.A. student who connects his literary studies to the business world’s need to tell stories.  This “rock star of the beer world” (Vanity Fair), who told the Philadelphia Inquirer that if he weren’t a brewer he would be an English teacher, said, “Look at any successful entrepreneur, and you realize that branding is storytelling.”  Similarly, while telling The Atlantic that he also might have become a writer of fiction, he explained, “there is no greater example of a work of fiction than a business plan.  As an entrepreneur you write it, then you spend your life trying to turn it into a work of non-fiction.”  And, as he explained to Vanity Fair, having an English degree has helped him communicate with his customers: “I think it’s a lot easier to have conversations about beer as a liquid art” than about making beer as a “scientific process”: “If you can make the liquid as enticing as the story, that’s the formula for success.”
