Meet the Student Advisory Council: 2025 Edition

Maria Therese Barry: I am a senior English and Humanities double major with a minor in Spanish, and I am from Colorado Springs, Colorado. On campus, I work as a tutor in the Writing Center, and I am also involved with Pastoral Musicians and the committee for Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week. I love serving on the advisory council as a way to get to know more fellow English majors and minors, faculty, and staff and to give back to the department that has given me so much!
This summer, I explored some nonfiction and really enjoyed reading J.R.R. Tolkien's letters! I am a big fan of The Lord of the Rings, so it was very interesting and fruitful to learn more about the creative mind behind it all!

Bianca Brucker: I'm a senior English and Peace and Justice major with minors in Writing and Rhetoric and communication from Bel Air, Maryland. On campus I'm an active part of Villanova's Service-Learning community and Villanova Student Theatre! I love being a member of the English Advisory Council because I greatly enjoy the tight-knit and welcoming community of English students and professors.
This summer I finally got around to reading The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt. I thought the book was beautifully written and greatly enjoyed how it dealt with the complex themes of grief and identity. I also enjoyed how a majority of the book took place in New York City because I was interning in the city this summer!

Peter Fabietti: My name is Peter Fabietti, and I’m a junior English major with a minor in Italian. On top of being part of the Student Advisory Council, I write for the Opinion section of The Villanovan and serve as a tutor in the Writing Center. I love being an English major because it gives me numerous opportunities to express myself creatively. Every professor I’ve had has been caring, intelligent, and inspiring, and I’m so lucky to be able to call this department my academic home here at Villanova.
I enjoyed reading Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant by Anne Tyler over the summer. Though, on the surface, it seems quite mundane, the book’s intricate layering of family dynamics makes it incredibly striking. Each chapter made me reflect on the complexities and joys within my own family, and I’m sure it will do the same for you.

Abby Glynn: My name is Abby Glynn, I am a senior English and Communications major with an Art minor. In addition to the Student Advisory Council, I am the Treasurer for Club Lacrosse and am a member of the Club Field Hockey team as well. Being an English major has provided me with the opportunity to meet so many amazing professors, get the chance to attend interesting courses, and gain valuable skills.
Over the summer I was re-reading the Harry Potter series in preparation for a class I am taking right now, Harry Potter: Quests and Questions. I had so much fun reading the series and found myself realizing new things about the books that I hadn’t before. The course with Professor Radcliffe is so interesting and I really enjoy analyzing a series that I loved so much when I was younger!

Kalyani Halsband: I am a junior English and Psychology major from New Jersey. I love being an English major at Villanova not only because I love reading and writing, but because of the supportive and close-knit community that allows for the chance to get to know fellow majors and professors alike. I also enjoy the creativity that comes along with the English major and the wide variety of career options it allows for. Being apart of the Advisory Council further enables me to connect with peers and staff and become more involved in the major, such as by promoting the major and meeting new students. In addition to the Advisory Council, I work as a research assistant in a psychology lab as well as in Dining Services.

One of my favorite books I read this summer was Where Are the Children? by Mary Higgins Clark. While I do not usually read mystery, I finished this book in a mere number of days due to its riveting, suspenseful nature; I would highly recommend it!

Allie Hesler: I’m a sophomore Environmental Science and English double major with a minor in Sustainability Studies and am from Steep Falls, Maine! On campus I am a part of Villanova Girl Gains, Student Sustainability Council, and NOVAdance. I love being a part of the English department because despite there being many people, there is such a close knit and welcoming community as well as such a diverse range of topics and classes to partake in. My most recent favorite read was Atmosphere by Taylor Jenkins Reid who is one of my favorite authors and this story easily is one of her best!

Katie Lewis: My name is Katie Lewis, and I am a senior from Miami, Florida double-majoring in English and Communication. I have concentrations in Writing & Rhetoric and Journalism. Channeling my love for writing into sports journalism, I am a co-sports editor of The Villanovan and a sports desk intern with The Philadelphia Inquirer. At Villanova, I’m also a member of the Faith & Learning Scholars program and the club tennis team.
A book that I enjoyed reading this summer was
My Friends
by Fredrik Backman. He is one of my favorite contemporary authors and I was excited to pick up his latest release shortly after it came out in May. In all of his novels that I’ve read, I love how Backman mixes humor and authenticity with heart-wrenching moments and memorable characters.

Sinéad Masterson: My name is Sinéad, and I am a senior English major from New Haven, Connecticut. I am involved in Villanova’s college radio station WXVU, I work in a restaurant, and I intern at a non-profit that works with refugee women from Afghanistan. I love being an English major because it encourages creativity, challenges me to sharpen my writing skills, and allows me to explore my interest in poetry. This summer I read Song of Solomon by Toni Morrison and lots of poetry by Ada Limón, all of which I loved. I’m very excited to be part of the English Student Advisory Council this year!

Seamus Tracy: Hi all, I'm Seamus! As an amateur novel writer, I study creative writing in the English department. When I'm not reading or writing books I spend my time drawing, playing D&D, or performing improv comedy with Villanova's Ridiculum. Reach out to me not only about the English major or creative writing minor, but also if you have questions about how to advance your career as a creative writer while still being a student!

Ailish Wilson: My name is Ailish, and I'm an English major here at Villanova! I have loved all of my English classes so far, and I appreciate the wide variety, from poetry, to journalism, to classic literature. I have also had such amazing and intelligent professors. As a member of the English major advisory council, I have helped out with events like the Major's Fair and an English Major Game Night. I'm so excited for everything the English advisory council has planned for this year!
This summer, I read Bossypants, Tina Fey's memoir. I really liked her sense of humor and sneak peek into life at SNL!

Thanks to all our student advisory council members! Please feel free to ask them questions about the major or minor!

English Major Amanda McKean Shares Career Center Wisdom

Hi Villanova English!

My name is Amanda McKean and I am a senior English and Political Science major with the goal of going to law school in the future. As spring is around the corner and internship and job season is upon us, I wanted to share a few key pieces of information about my experience as a Career Center Ambassador and all the ways in which the Career Center and English Department work together to help English majors achieve their goals.

As a Career Center Ambassador, my role is to oversee front desk operations, including managing daily appointments and providing help/customer service to students and employees all across campus. In addition, over the past year I have become qualified to conduct resume reviews when students come in during our drop-in hours. During this time, myself, other CCAs, and our professional career counselors work with students to make their resume and cover the very best it can be while also answering questions they may have on interviewing, internship opportunities, and even tech issues regarding out platforms such Nova Network, Handshake, Big Interview, and LinkedIn. Lastly, you may see me around during some of the Career Center events that take place on campus helping out my coworkers to ensure everything runs smoothly.

If I could offer all English majors, from freshmen to seniors, three major pieces of advice based on my experience at the Career Center I would tell them:

  1. Take advantage of everything FREE this school and Career Center has to offer:
    1. Need a headshot but don’t want to hire a photographer? At the Career Center, we have a high-tech photo booth which allows you to take your own photo, and even make touch ups to your picture to improve teeth whiteness, skin blemishes, and overall lighting.
    2. Enjoy our Wildcat Wardrobe: Sign up on Handshake and you can take a look at what I call our free thrift shop with really nice professional clothes that have been generously donated.
    3. Sign up with Nova Network and Big Interview to connect with alumni and to check your resume or practice interviewing.
      1. Though some people do not like AI checking their resume, Big Interview is a great resource used by the Business and Engineering Schools to practice interviewing. Give it a try!
  2. Meet with a career counselor adviser at any point in your career!
    1. Here is a list of our fantastic Career Counselors and the industries they cover. I have been working with Alex Karlesses, the Pre-Law advisor who has helped me every step of the way in my journey to law school.
    2. The meeting can be 15 to 30 minutes and is just a nice way to start the conversation on what you want to do or what you are looking for.
  3. If you are more individual or do not have time to make it up to our office in Garey Hall 117, check out our Career Connections website that has everything you are looking for from major specific Career Resources, information on graduate school, law school, and medical school, and a calendar of upcoming events:
    1. **Tip: Type your desired field or job, such as “Legal Assistant” or “English Major,” into the search bar. From there you will get news articles, events, jobs and internships, resources, people, and videos if applicable.

SPECIAL NOTE:  Career Center Services are for LIFE

●      As an undergraduate and eventual alumni of Villanova, the Career Centers free services do not stop once you graduate. We have an entire department dedicated to our alumni so if at any point you want to change careers or jobs and need help, you can always come back or call and someone will help you.

●      For more information you can click the link here.

For more information on the Career Center click here or call (610) 519-4060.

***If anyone is looking for a part-time student job, the Career Center is graduating a lot of Career Center Ambassadors like myself so they are looking for new applicants! It's a great way to connect with people who could help you get a job! ***

Favorite Summer Books!

The start of the semester doesn't have to mean the end of reading for pleasure. Members of the advisory council share their favorite book from the summer to help you build your to-be-read list.

Maria Therese Barry really enjoyed reading The Dictionary of Lost Words by Pip Williams over the summer. It was a great historical fiction piece centered around the origins of the Oxford English Dictionary. I also appreciated how it delved into the topic of reviving the words that were originally missed in the Dictionary's first-ever published fascicles and fell out of common use (hence the "lost words").

Ailish Wilson enjoyed Caraval by Stephanie Garber: Scarlett Dragna receives a ticket to Caraval, an enchanted carnival where nothing is what it seems.

Over the Summer, Sonia Singh enjoyed reading The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon, which is a sapphic retelling of St. George and the Dragon. If you're looking for a queer fantasy novel, you should add this one to your TBR list!

Katie Lewis enjoyed reading The God of the Woods by Liz Moore. The vivid Adirondack setting and engaging, twisting plot makes this a quintessential summer mystery (with lots of survival tips scattered throughout)!

Bianca Brucker's favorite read this summer would have to be The Hotel Nantucket by Elin Hilderbrand. The story takes place in the heart of Nantucket in a magnificent beach themed hotel where there is a lavish restaurant and bar, and all the hotel bathroom tiles are made out of real oyster shells. The novel is full of summer scandals and relationships. Many guests come to the hotel for a break (or to run away) from their day to day lives and somehow their stories start to intertwine. Even the ghost of the hotel has an interesting storyline and experiences a summer she won't forget!

Amanda McKean recommends The Outsiders. Before seeing the now the Tony award-winning musical, she read the book and watched the movie to round out this classic American novel whose messages and adaptations stand the test of time with its original characters and complex portrayal of the American teenager.

Over the summer, Mickey Wilcox enjoyed Stephanie McCarter's translation of Ovid's Metamorphoses. He appreciated how McCarter's new translation portrayed the often immensely one-sided relationships between Gods and mortals, and confronted head-on the sexual violence that marked these relationships. The Metamorphoses is a wonderful encyclopedia of ancient Greek and Roman myth, and is a fun read when reading through a whole book (chapter), or just focusing on a specific mythological tale.

Emily Hanlon enjoyed Writers & Lovers by Lily King.

Meet the Student Advisory Council!

Villanova's English department cares about community--whether that means discussions about literature in class, chatting about moldy mattresses and other horrors during All About the Bagels, or conversations about internships, careers, and upcoming classes at the pre-registration reception. Serving many important roles-- peer mentors, representatives of the English department, social media influencers, consultants, members of the English department's Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion committee, journalists, swag designers--students on the Advisory Council do important work shaping our community. Look for them in classes and at English department events and don't be afraid to ask them about the major or share your ideas for Villanova English with them.

Camille Ferace

Hello! My name is Camille Ferace. I am a senior English and Communications double major. I plan on attending law school following graduation and had the amazing opportunity to intern at my local District Attorney’s office this past summer. Throughout this internship, I was able to sit in on numerous trials and hearings, read different cases, and gain exposure to the field and study of law. On campus, I am involved with many organizations including being on the volunteers committee for Special Olympics and Vice President of Operation Smile! I am very excited to be a part of the Student Advisory Council and cannot wait to be a contributing voice for the English department, which is such a great group of individuals!

Maria Therese Barry

I am Maria Therese Barry, a junior English major from Colorado with minors in Spanish Language and Literature and Humanities. Starting this year, I am working as a tutor at Villanova's Writing Center! I also enjoy my involvement with student organizations on campus such as the Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week committee, Ellipsis literary magazine, the Copy Desk staff of The Villanovan, and Pastoral Musicians. Next semester in Spring 2025, I will be studying abroad at the University of Oxford, which I am very excited about! While I am away, I will really miss the people at the VU English department, along with the department's knack for combining a supportive academic community with fun social events.

Ailish Wilson

My name is Ailish Wilson, and I'm a junior English and economics major. I'm involved in organizations such as the Irish dance team, campus ministry, and The Villanovan. I am excited for everything that the English advisory council is planning!

Emily Hanlon

I am Emily Hanlon, a senior English major and Irish Studies minor. On campus, I am involved in Ellipsis Literary Magazine where I serve as the Co-Director of Social Media and Marketing and am of course involved in the wonderful English Department Student Advisory Council! I also work on campus as an Office Assistant in the Chemistry Department and have been involved with the New Student Orientation Program as a Transfer Counselor and as the Transfer Captain on the Steering Committee. In the future I plan to apply to law school!

Sonia Singh

My name is Sonia Singh, and I'm a senior English major and an aspiring college professor and researcher. I transferred to Villanova two years ago and am going into my third year here. I am the Director of Outreach and Administration of ELLIPSIS, which is one of the literary magazines on campus, on the steering committee for VU Pride, and an RA in Trinity hall. I am a huge Agatha Christie, romance, and fantasy fan! I will never say no to buying a pretty notebook (the collection of unused pretty notebooks I have is beside the point)!

Katie Lewis

My name is Katie Lewis and I am a junior English and Communication major from Miami, FL. I have concentrations in Writing & Rhetoric and Journalism. My main interests and career goals are in writing and journalism. I am Co-Sports Editor of The Villanovan and a Sports Desk Intern with The Philadelphia Inquirer. At Villanova, I’m also a member of the Honors Program, Faith & Learning Scholars program, and the club tennis team.

Will Corliss

My name is Will Corliss. I am a senior English and Psychology double major (with a focus in pre-law) from Barnegat, NJ. I am a huge fan/nerd of lacrosse, basketball, and football. On campus, I work as a tutor at the Writing Center and participate in a handful of intramural sports. I plan on attending law school after graduating, and although every English class is great preparation for a legal career, my time in Legal Writing and Analysis was one of my favorite academic experiences at Villanova. I conducted legal research project that analyzed and advocated for the benefits of natural grass over artificial turf fields in professional football. During my research, I talked with Andrew Brandt, former Green Bay Packers Vice President and current Executive Director of the Moorad Center for the Study of Sports Law at Villanova Law, examining sections of the NFL’s Collective Bargaining Agreement regarding player injury lawsuits as well as proposed solutions for artificial turf-using teams to implement natural grass in the future. I strongly believe that the versatility of the English major here at Villanova is a valuable and worthwhile investment for any student in CLAS!

Bianca Brucker

Hi! My name is Bianca Brucker and I am a Junior English and Peace and Justice major with minors in Communication and Writing and Rhetoric from Bel Air, Maryland. On campus I am involved in Villanova's Service-Learning Community, Villanova Student Theatre, Villanova's Mock Trial Team, and Villanova's Pre-Law Society. My favorite English course taken at Villanova so far is a course titled, "Motherhood and Reproductive Fictions" with Dr. Lutes. (I highly recommend taking it!!) This summer, I had the amazing opportunity to study abroad in Greece, through Villanova's communication department. My study abroad gave me a newfound passion for Greek Literature. After graduating Villanova, I hope to attend Law School!

Amanda McKean

My name is Amanda McKean, and I am a senior English and Political Science double major. My goal is to attend law school in 1-2 years but until that time I want to work in a law firm or under a lawyer to get some experience in the field. At Villanova, I am a columnist for the sports section of The Villanovan, a member of COV, and I work at the Career Center! I am excited to join this great group of peers and being a representative of the English Department!

Mickey Wilcox

Besides the Student Advisory Council, I am the Secretary of Villanova Student Musical Theatre, and have performed in many musicals on campus. I thrive in the English Department in part due to our wonderful professors. Each and every one not only wants to see you succeed, but is dedicated to helping you become a stronger writer, a closer reader, and the best version of yourself.

Hi everyone! My name is Rachel Rhee and I am so excited to serve on the English Department's Student Advisory Council this year. I am a senior English and Communication double major in the Honors Program with Communication Specializations in Performance Studies and Media Production. On campus, you can find me planning events as the Director of Programming for Villanova's Student Government Association, discussing curriculum as a student representative on the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee for the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, and watching sunsets by the church. Last year, I also had the opportunity to attend a creative writing conference at Queen’s University in Belfast, N. Ireland and it was one of my favorite experiences within the English department! After graduation, I plan to pursue my Master’s degree in Education so I can share my passion for reading, writing, and performing with others as a teacher in the elementary school setting!

Katie Lewis
I am a sophomore English and Communication major with a concentration in Writing and Rhetoric. Since last year, I’ve been writing for The Villanovan sports and news sections. I transferred to Villanova in fall 2022 and was also a Transfer Counselor for the wonderful orientation program this past August. I am also involved in both literary magazines on campus and work in the chemistry department office. Two of my goals this year are to write more poetry and to read more nonfiction outside of class! Kylie Horan

I am a Senior English and Italian major with minors in Creative Writing and Gender and Women's Studies. My areas of literary interest are Modernism and Early Modern drama, and I have been fortunate enough to bring several Shakespearean plays to life onstage as an actor and director with Villanova Student Theatre. I work as a writing tutor and the Assistant to the Director at the VU Writing Center, as well as hold TA positions for both English and Italian courses. During my time at Villanova, I have had many wonderful opportunities to explore my passions for art, culture, and education. I received the Patriarch Family Scholarship to study Italian literature, history, and language in Siena, Italy during the Summer of 2023 and plan to continue traveling and studying abroad after graduation as I (hopefully!) progress in my path towards becoming an academic.

Kaitlin Gibson

I am a Sophomore double major in English and Irish Studies. I hope to break into higher education, pursuing English and my love of literature well past my time at Villanova. With my English major, I have enjoyed sampling bits of humanity from around the world, learning more about the human conditions and the complexities of our life through the art of others. I especially love reading novels that focus on themes of coming of age and coming into self, especially those that reflect on the unique female experience of growing up. I am involved in a few things on campus, including the Villanova Pastoral Musicians, Chi Omega Sorority, Irish Cultural Society, Peer Ministry, and Faith and Learning Scholars. I look forward to another great – and fun! – year with the English department, which is full of wonderful human beings who have always been exceedingly kind and supportive of me and my aspirations. I also look forward to another year of Bagel Tuesdays – the best day of the week!

Hannah de Melo

Hello! I’m Hannah de Melo, a senior English and GWS (Gender and Women’s Studies) double major with a minor in Peace and Justice. I grew up in Rhode Island before attending Villanova in 2020. Currently, I live off-campus in Newtown Square with my roommate and cat. I am the Leader of Development for Villanova’s The Space, a club designed to create opportunities for valuable conversations surrounding reproductive issues. I am also a member of several other clubs that focus on social justice and the betterment of our campus and world. I hope to eventually combine my passion for social reform with my love for reading and writing, which the Villanova English Department has encouraged and cultivated for several years already through classes, events, and more.

Jo Mastrodomenico

My name is Jo Mastrodomenico and I'm a senior this year! I'm an English major with minors in Italian and History. During my time at Villanova, I have completed several legal internships, including one for credit in the English major. After graduation, I hope to attend law school.

Gabe Jimenez

Hi everyone! My name is Gabe Jimenez, I’m from New York City, and I’m a junior here at Villanova majoring in English with minors in Economics and Creative Writing. My combination of English and Economics as main points of study here at Villanova have provided me a very unique experience in that I am able to really focus on the writing aspects that go into researching and understanding fluctuations in micro and macroeconomic environments. This has led me to pursue law school after I graduate where I hope to work in contributing to write and revise newer versions of the Bankruptcy Code. I just recently completed an internship at Reorg Research as a legal analyst intern where I reported on numerous ongoing legal matters in the bankruptcy world. I thoroughly enjoy reading and writing fiction, however I have shifted recently to writing a non-fiction story about the life of my great-grandmother and her journey to emigrate from Puerto Rico to the US post World War II. Here at Villanova, I am involved with ALPFA, the History Society, the Pre-Law Society, the Matthew J. Ryan Center, and Villanova’s newest non-secretive fraternity Delta Upsilon. The English major as a whole has provided me with so many amazing opportunities, my favorite being the "Writing Through Conflict" class with Alan Drew where we were able to travel to Belfast during fall break last year and met with several authors and poets that provided my classmates and I with so many amazing tips and insights into their writing and how we can apply their skills and lessons learned to our own writing.

Sonia Singh

My name is Sonia Singh, and I'm a junior English major and an aspiring lawyer. I am the Co-Director of Outreach and Administration of ELLIPSIS, which is one of the literary magazines on campus! I am also an RA in Delurey hall and super excited to live on campus this year because as a transfer student, I lived off-campus last year! I am a huge Agatha Christie, romance, and fantasy fan! (So, if you like any of those things or are interested in the literary magazine, please don't hesitate to get in touch!)

Mickey Wilcox

I'm a junior English major, Classical Studies major, and Creative Writing minor. I enjoy reading epic poetry, such as Beowulf and Homer's Iliad and Odyssey. One day, I wish to dive into Vyasa's Mahabharata and The Epic of Gilgamesh. Along with the Advisory Council, I am also a member of Villanova Student Musical Theatre. I studied abroad in Greece over the summer with the Communications program, studying ancient myths, democracy, and rhetoric.

Bianca Brucker

Hi! My name is Bianca Brucker and I am a Sophomore English Major with minors in Peace and Justice and Gender and Women Studies from Bel Air, Maryland. On campus I am involved in a sorority, Villanova's Sophomore Service Learning Community, Villanova Student Theatre, Villanova's Mock Trial Team, and Villanova's Pre-Law Society. My favorite English course taken at Villanova so far is a course titled, "Motherhood and Reproductive Fictions" with Dr. Lutes. My favorite literary genres are Fantasy, Historical Fiction, and Thriller novels. I hope to pursue a career in writing and editing and/or Public Relations after graduation!
